McCoy Tyner

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The pianist McCoy Tyner grew up in Philadelphia; Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk were his models. From 1960 to 1965 he played in John Coltrane's quartet. He used chords built on fourths instead of thirds: quartal chords. These sound open and hard and suit modal music. With his left hand he played powerful low root notes. After Coltrane he led groups of his own; The Real McCoy (1967) became a classic. His way of playing influenced nearly every jazz pianist after him.
