Today and Tomorrow

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Today and Tomorrow is pianist McCoy Tyner's fifth album as a leader. It was released on the Impulse! label and came about in two sessions, in 1963 and 1964. In June 1963 Tyner played in a trio, with bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Albert Heath. In February 1964 a sextet followed, with tenor saxophonist John Gilmore, trumpeter Thad Jones, alto saxophonist Frank Strozier, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Elvin Jones.

Because of those two line-ups, the album is varied. Contemporary Focus, T 'N A Blues and Three Flowers come from the sextet session. A Night in Tunisia, Autumn Leaves and When Sunny Gets Blue were recorded by the trio. The American critic Scott Yanow wrote on AllMusic that this record offers more variety than most of the pianist's Impulse recordings.

Listening tip. Listen to A Night in Tunisia, a composition by Dizzy Gillespie, and notice how the pianist plays the piece with only bass and drums.
