Elvin Jones

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Elvin Jones from Pontiac, Michigan, came from a musical family; his brothers were the pianist Hank Jones and the trumpeter Thad Jones. From 1960 to 1966 he was the drummer in John Coltrane's quartet. His playing was full and rolling: he played rhythms in three against four and let the beat, as it were, roll. With Coltrane he conducted long, intense dialogues, especially in the live pieces. After the quartet he led groups of his own, with, among others, the saxophonists Joe Farrell and Dave Liebman, and he played until shortly before his death in 2004. He often gave workshops in schools and prisons.

Listening tip. Hear the drums as waves: not a rigid beat, but a continuous movement.
