Elvin!
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Elvin! is a jazz album by drummer Elvin Jones, recorded in 1961 and 1962 and released on the label Riverside. Here he plays in a group with his brothers, Thad on cornet and Hank on piano, together with tenor saxophonist Frank Foster, flautist Frank Wess and bassist Art Davis.
The material is largely little known: only You Are Too Beautiful is a true standard. Many pieces are by Thad Jones, the rest by Oliver Nelson and Ernie Wilkins, among others. AllMusic heard straight-ahead music with a strong Count Basie feel and wrote that the drummer can swing even in such a fairly conventional setting. According to the same review, all the musicians are in good form.
