Dear John C.
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Dear John C. is an album by drummer Elvin Jones, recorded in February 1965 for the label Impulse!. By John C. in the title he means John Coltrane, with whom he had played earlier. Jones leads a quartet here with alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano, pianist Roland Hanna and bassist Richard Davis. On three tracks Hank Jones plays piano.
The repertoire is varied and includes Love Bird by Charles Mingus, Anthropology by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, and Feeling Good and Fantazm by Duke Ellington. According to AllMusic nothing is overdone, not even in Jones's own drumming. The album displays teamwork and restrained dynamics and, according to that review, is too often underestimated. The reviewer finds it worthwhile for drummers and jazz lovers to listen to it again.
