McCoy Tyner

Pianist McCoy Tyner groeide op in Philadelphia; Bud Powell en Thelonious Monk waren zijn voorbeelden. Van 1960 tot 1965 speelde hij in het kwartet van John Coltrane. Hij gebruikte akkoorden die op kwarten zijn gebouwd in plaats van tertsen: kwartakkoorden. Die klinken open en hard en passen bij modale muziek. Met zijn linkerhand speelde hij krachtige lage grondtonen. Na Coltrane leidde hij eigen groepen; The Real McCoy (1967) werd een klassieker. Zijn manier van spelen beïnvloedde bijna alle jazzpianisten na hem.
