Bud Powell

Bud Powell vertaalde de bebop van Charlie Parker naar de piano. Hij groeide op in Harlem en bewonderde de techniek van Art Tatum. Thelonious Monk nam hem als jonge pianist onder zijn hoede in Minton's. Powell speelde met de rechterhand lange, snelle lijnen als een saxofonist, terwijl de linkerhand korte akkoorden op ongelijke momenten aanslaat. Die manier van spelen werd het voorbeeld voor bijna alle moderne jazzpianisten. Hij schreef stukken als Un Poco Loco en Tempus Fugue-It. Na een harde mishandeling door de politie in 1945 had hij zijn leven lang psychische problemen. Van 1959 tot 1964 woonde hij in Parijs. Hij stierf in 1966 in New York.
