Lo-fi hip hop

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Lo-fi hip hop is calm, instrumental hip hop to study or relax to. Lo-fi stands for low fidelity: the sound is deliberately a little dull, with the hiss and crackle of an old record. The beats are slow and sound slightly sloppy, with samples of jazz piano and guitar. Major examples were the Japanese producer Nujabes and the American J Dilla. From 2017 the French YouTube channel ChilledCow, now Lofi Girl, made the genre world-famous with a livestream that runs day and night.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Time: The Donut of the Heart for how J Dilla turns a snippet of soul by The Jackson 5 into a slow, slightly dragging loop.
