Nu jazz
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Nu jazz · In London from the late 1980s, DJs such as Gilles Peterson played acid jazz: jazz, funk and soul for the dance floor. Hip hop producers searched old jazz, soul and funk records for breaks to sample; in 1993 Us3 made Cantaloop on a sample of Herbie Hancock. Out of that meeting between jazz and club culture came nu jazz: an electronic form of jazz, combined with house, downtempo and breakbeat.
