Jinsang

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jinsang is a lo-fi hip hop producer, also known as chillhop. It is a stage name, used, among other things, for instrumental beats that became popular as background music for studying and relaxing. The source available was about a Korean classical pianist with a similar name, who is not meant here. Little is therefore recorded here about the person behind the project, and the text confines itself to what is known.

Music and breakthrough

Jinsang's music follows the familiar lo-fi style. A slow hip hop rhythm from a drum machine is combined with soft jazz chords, often a piano or electric piano, and a warm, deliberately imperfect sound with crackling vinyl noise. The tracks are instrumental and usually short, so that they loop well. Such a beat recalls the samples of J Dilla and Nujabes, who defined the style.

Influence

Affection from 2016 belongs to this repertoire. Lo-fi hip hop grew in those years mainly on the internet, through video channels and streaming services, where the music was shared without vocals and without a clear star. The genre shows how a small, intimate production made with simple means can reach a large worldwide audience, and how popular music can also serve as atmosphere and background.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Affection and notice the drum machine and the soft chords: can you hear the crackle of the vinyl noise, and does the rhythm sound deliberately a little loose and uneven?
