Joe Zawinul

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The keyboardist Joe Zawinul grew up in Vienna, where he learned accordion and classical piano. In 1959 he left for the United States and from 1961 he played for almost ten years with Cannonball Adderley, for whom he wrote Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, on electric piano. He wrote the title piece of In a Silent Way for Miles Davis. In 1970, with Wayne Shorter, he founded Weather Report, the best-known fusion band of the 1970s. Zawinul used synthesizers like an orchestra. Birdland (1977), a tribute to the New York jazz club, became a hit and a standard. Later he led the Zawinul Syndicate with musicians from all over the world.
