Cannonball Adderley

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Cannonball Adderley · Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley was a music teacher in Florida when in 1955 he sat in at a club in New York and stood out at once. His alto saxophone sounded like Charlie Parker's, but warmer and with more blues and gospel. From 1957 to 1959 he played in Miles Davis's sextet, including on Kind of Blue. After that he led a quintet that played soul jazz, together with his brother, the cornettist Nat Adderley. With This Here (1959) and Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (1966), written by his pianist Joe Zawinul, he had hits. During concerts Adderley addressed the audience and explained the music. He died of a stroke in 1975.
