In the Land of Hi-Fi

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In the Land of Hi-Fi with Julian Cannonball Adderley is an album by the alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, released in 1956 by EmArcy (MG 36077). It was recorded on 8 and 18 June 1956 at Capitol Studios in New York. The lineup is a nonet: Adderley, his brother Nat (cornet), Ernie Royal (trumpet), Bobby Byrne and Jimmy Cleveland (trombone), Jerome Richardson (tenor saxophone and flute), Danny Bank (baritone saxophone), Junior Mance (piano), Keter Betts (bass) and Specs Wright (drums). Ernie Wilkins conducted and arranged.

It is hard bop in arrangements for six horns. Wilkins wrote the opening track "Dog My Cats". There are also standards, such as "Little Girl Blue" by Rodgers and Hart, and original material from within the group: "Blues for Bohemia" by the Adderley brothers and "Junior's Tune" by Mance. No track lasts much longer than four minutes. The album followed Julian Cannonball Adderley and Strings (1955). AllMusic gave it 2.5 stars, the Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide (1985) three.

Listening

Listening tip. In "Dog My Cats", which lasts only 2:26, listen to how Ernie Wilkins sets the six horns as a single block against Adderley's alto saxophone.
