Little Girl Blue

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Little Girl Blue is Nina Simone's debut. She recorded it in late 1957 in New York for Bethlehem Records, with bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Tootie Heath. In a thirteen-hour session, fourteen songs were made, of which eleven made the album. She was then in her mid-twenties, still wanted to become a concert pianist and sold the rights straight away for 3,000 dollars. The album lay on the shelf for a long time and was not released until February 1959. In April she signed with Colpix.

Bethlehem then released I Loves You, Porgy as a single, and it became her first hit: number 18 in the pop chart and number 2 in the R&B chart. The album thereby also became a success. In 1987 My Baby Just Cares for Me became a big hit in Britain and Europe, and a reissue followed.

Listening

Listening tip. In I Loves You, Porgy, listen to how she sings and plays piano with only bass and drums alongside: how little is needed?
