Nina Simone
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Eunice Waymon from Tryon, North Carolina, wanted to become a concert pianist. When she was rejected by the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, which she herself attributed to racism, she began playing and singing in bars as Nina Simone. Her first album Little Girl Blue (1958) contained My Baby Just Cares for Me and I Loves You, Porgy, which became a hit. She blended jazz, blues, gospel and classical piano technique. After the church bombing in Birmingham in 1963 she wrote Mississippi Goddam and became a voice of the civil rights movement. Four Women is about four Black women. Later she lived in Africa, Europe and, briefly, the Netherlands.
