Nina Simone sings and plays piano, and is accompanied by guitarist Rudy Stevenson, among others. Hal Mooney and Horace Ott wrote the arrangements and conducted. Critics call it one of her most pop-oriented records, but also one of her best and most consistent. In doing so, according to the review, she gives a sharp edge to songs that might otherwise have sounded saccharine. On the album, Blues on Purpose is a purely jazz instrumental. In 2017, NPR placed the album at number three on a list of the one hundred and fifty greatest albums by women. In 2024, Apple Music put it at number 88 of the best albums of all time.
