Africa

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Song

In April 1982, Toto IV was released, with Africa and Rosanna. Toto consisted of Los Angeles session musicians who also played on other artists' records, including Michael Jackson's Thriller. Their sound was smooth, perfect and complex. Critics found it soulless, but the album won six Grammys. Years later, through the internet, Africa became one of the best-known songs of the 1980s.

Listening

Listening tip. Africa has a percussion rhythm and a synthesizer melody that sounds like a kalimba. Listen for the big, multi-voiced chorus.
