Wild Is the Wind
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Wild Is the Wind is Nina Simone's sixth studio album and was released in 1966 on Philips Records. It is not an album that was recorded in one go. It was compiled from recordings that had been left over after the 1964 and 1965 sessions for earlier Philips albums.
The whole is a calm, romantic one built around piano and voice. Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair was deliberately given little accompaniment: only piano and a bass note. Four Women was released as a single and was banned by the New York jazz station WLIB because of its lyrics. Billboard called the album a special merit pick on release. Later the title song was covered by David Bowie on Station to Station, and Lilac Wine by Jeff Buckley on Grace. In 2020, Rolling Stone placed it at number 212 of the 500 greatest albums ever.
