Station to Station

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Station to Station was released on 23 January 1976 on RCA. David Bowie recorded it in late 1975, mostly at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles, after the filming of The Man Who Fell to Earth. He was plagued by drug addiction at the time and later remembered almost nothing of the sessions. The success of Young Americans gave him time and room. He came to the studio with loose ideas, and the guitarist Carlos Alomar, the bassist George Murray and the drummer Dennis Davis worked them out. Those three formed his rhythm section for the rest of the decade.

The album builds on the funk and soul of Young Americans, but also looks to the German krautrock of Neu! and Kraftwerk. The lyrics deal with Nietzsche, Aleister Crowley and mythology. Golden Years was released ahead of it as a single. During the sessions Frank Sinatra praised the recording of Wild Is the Wind, which Bowie made as a tribute to Nina Simone.
