“Heroes”
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
“Heroes” · After Low, released in early 1977 with hardly any promotion, David Bowie recorded Iggy Pop's Lust for Life in Berlin in May and June. After that he was ready for a new record of his own. Together with Brian Eno and the producer Tony Visconti, he settled in Hansa Studio 2, a former concert hall about five hundred metres from the Berlin Wall. Visconti said that the threatening atmosphere made the band play with a great deal of energy. The guitarist Robert Fripp was brought in on Eno's suggestion.
Most of the music was created on the spot in the studio, and Bowie wrote the lyrics only in front of the microphone. The record builds on the electronic and ambient approach of Low, but sounds more positive. The first side contains straightforward rock songs, the second mostly instrumental pieces. The title song was at first not a success as a single, but grew into one of his best known.
