Low

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Low · After years of cocaine addiction, David Bowie moved to France in 1976 together with Iggy Pop. Recording began in September 1976 at the Château d'Hérouville and ended in October at Hansa Studios in West Berlin. It was the first of three collaborations with the producer Tony Visconti and Brian Eno, the Berlin Trilogy. German groups such as Tangerine Dream, Neu!, Harmonia and Kraftwerk were an influence.

The first side consists of short, direct song fragments with mostly bleak lyrics. The second side has longer, mainly instrumental pieces, intended as musical impressions of Berlin. Visconti created the characteristic drum sound with an Eventide Harmonizer. The record company held the record back for three months for fear of a flop. Critics were divided, but later it was regarded as one of the singer's best albums. Many post-punk bands were influenced by it.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sound and Vision and notice the drum sound, which was processed with a harmonizer.
