Nina Simone Sings Ellington

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Nina Simone Sings Ellington · In 1962, Nina Simone recorded songs that Duke Ellington had recorded. He wrote most of them himself or with others, such as Irving Mills and Billy Strayhorn. It was her fourth studio album. She sang, played piano and wrote the arrangements herself. The Malcolm Dodds Singers accompany her.

The sleeve shows only her head, in colour. According to her autobiography, the photograph was meant as an image of her whole body, but she was pregnant with her daughter Lisa at the time. The photographer tried various poses to hide her belly, and probably did not succeed. A leftover shot from the same session she used in 1966 for Nina Simone with Strings.

Listening

Listening tip. In Satin Doll, the only instrumental song, listen to how the piano fares without vocals.
