Sophisticated Swing
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Sophisticated Swing is Cannonball Adderley's fifth album and his fourth on EmArcy. He plays here in a quintet with his brother Nat Adderley on cornet, Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Recording took place at Capitol Studios in New York, on 6, 8 and 11 February 1957. The photograph on the sleeve was taken by Chuck Stewart, at the Ulysses S. Grant Monument in Chicago.
The repertoire consists of original pieces by Nat Adderley, Gene Wright and Sam Jones, among others, along with standards such as Spring Is Here and Stella By Starlight. In AllMusic, Scott Yanow called the music bop-oriented and bluesy, but less soulful than later.
