Somethin’ Else

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Somethin’ Else · Cannonball Adderley recorded this album on 9 March 1958 and released it in August on Blue Note, the only one he made for that label. At the time he was playing in Miles Davis's quintet, shortly after its record Milestones, and Davis took part as trumpeter, one of the few times he recorded as a sideman. Davis plays several of the first solos, wrote the bluesy title track and, according to the sleeve notes, chose most of the material. Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey also played, with Alfred Lion as producer.

The trumpeter said that his approach to Autumn Leaves came out of the inspiration of pianist Ahmad Jamal. At the end of One for Daddy O you can hear him ask Lion whether this is what he wanted. DownBeat gave the record five stars in 1958, praising Davis's lyrical playing on Autumn Leaves. The Penguin Guide to Jazz placed the album in its core selection.

Listening

Listening tip. In Autumn Leaves, listen to Miles Davis's lyrical trumpet playing, which DownBeat already praised in 1958.
