Money in the Pocket

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Money in the Pocket is the first album under his own name by the jazz fusion keyboardist Joe Zawinul. It was released in 1966 on Atlantic and was the first of three albums he recorded for that label. He plays piano, with, among others, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone and Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone.

The album sounds like an ordinary mix of hard bop and soul jazz from the mid-sixties. The Guardian pointed to the driving grooves, the many backbeats, repeated riffs and tight stops of the horns. All About Jazz found it remarkable that the record gives no hint yet of the great stylistic changes his work would undergo a few years later. AllMusic gave three stars.
