Airto Moreira
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Percussionist Airto Moreira grew up in the south of Brazil and played in Brazil in groups such as the Quarteto Novo. At the end of the 1960s he went to the United States with Flora Purim. Miles Davis took him into his band around 1970; after that he played in the first line-up of Weather Report and of Return to Forever. Airto brought Brazilian percussion instruments such as the cuíca, the berimbau and all kinds of shakers into jazz. He is often cited as the one who gave the percussionist a permanent place in the jazz band. Fingers (1972) shows his own music.
