From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The singer Flora Purim grew up in Rio de Janeiro and sang in the bossa nova scene there. In 1967 she left for the United States with her husband, the percussionist Airto Moreira. She sang in the first line-up of Chick Corea's Return to Forever, on What Game Shall We Play Today and Light as a Feather, among others. She used her voice as an instrument, with a wide range and wordless sounds. In 1974 she was convicted of drug possession and spent some time in prison; afterwards she made several albums. In the 1970s she was voted best singer several times in DownBeat magazine.
