Encounter

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Encounter is a studio album by the Brazilian jazz singer Flora Purim, released in 1977 on Milestone Records. It is a record with an exceptionally large guest list. Joe Henderson plays tenor saxophone, Raul de Souza trombone, McCoy Tyner acoustic piano and George Duke electric piano and synthesizer. Hermeto Pascoal plays electric piano and clavinet and sings along. Ron Carter plays acoustic bass and Airto Moreira drums and plays percussion on nearly all the tracks.

The line-up changes from track to track, so that jazz and electric sounds alternate. Scott Yanow of AllMusic gave the record four and a half stars and called it one of Purim's best jazz recordings.

Listening tip. Listen to Windows and notice how the singing relates to Joe Henderson's saxophone and George Duke's keyboards.
