Stories to Tell

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Stories to Tell is the fourth solo album by the Brazilian jazz singer Flora Purim. It was released in 1974 on Milestone Records. Her husband, percussionist Airto Moreira, led a large company of jazz and fusion musicians who assisted her.

Among them were George Duke on keyboards and synthesizer, Earl Klugh on guitar, bassist Ron Carter and, on one track, guitarist Carlos Santana. The album shows many sides of Purim: wordless singing that soars upwards, songs in English and Portuguese, brisk pieces full of percussion and quiet ballads. AllMusic gave the album four stars and noted the wide range of her abilities.

Listening tip. Listen to Insensatez and notice her voice and the language in which she sings. Hear how restrained the accompaniment remains in a ballad.
