Trio and Duet

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Trio and Duet · Anthony Braxton recorded this album in 1974 for the Canadian label Sackville. It shows him in two settings: a trio with an original composition and three duets on jazz standards. In the trio, trumpeter Leo Smith and Richard Teitelbaum on Moog synthesizer play along. In the duets, Dave Holland plays bass. He uses alto saxophone, clarinet and contrabass clarinet, and also chimes and bass drum.

The record contains The Song Is You, Embraceable You and You Go to My Head, alongside the long opening piece Composition 36. Delmark Records reissued the album in 2015 with two bonus tracks, On Green Dolphin Street and I Remember You. The AllMusic reviewer gave it four stars. Critics later called it one of the best records he made in the 1970s, and proof of his many-sided vision.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Embraceable You and notice the interplay of saxophone and bass. Try to hear how freely both musicians treat the familiar melody.
