Karlheinz Stockhausen

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Karlheinz Stockhausen studied in Cologne and with Messiaen in Paris, and from 1953 worked in the electronic studio of the broadcaster WDR in Cologne. He was one of the first to forge electronic sounds and recorded voices into a single composition. In Gesang der Jünglinge from 1956, the voice of a boy fuses with electronic tones that move through space. His ideas also inspired pop musicians, and his portrait appears on the cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Gesang der Jünglinge and hear how the boy's voice is sometimes intelligible and sometimes dissolves into electronic sounds, short clicks and noise.
