Anton Webern

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Anton Webern studied musicology in Vienna and was one of Schoenberg's first pupils. He adopted the twelve-tone method and turned it into extremely concentrated music in which every note counts and silences weigh as heavily as sounds. His Symphony, Op. 21 of 1928 lasts only about ten minutes and is built from mirrorings and canons. After the Second World War he became the great example for the young serialists in Darmstadt.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the first movement of the Symphony and hear how isolated notes leap from instrument to instrument, with plenty of silence in between.
