Serialism
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Serialism · After the Second World War, young composers wanted to start completely afresh. At the summer courses in Darmstadt, they heard Olivier Messiaen's Mode de valeurs et d'intensités (1949), in which every note has a fixed duration, dynamic and attack. Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen went even further in Structures and Kreuzspiel, organising in series not only the pitches but also rhythm and volume. The result sounds like a starry sky of separate points.
Listening
Listening tip. Hear how every note in Mode de valeurs stands on its own, with its own length and loudness, with no melody you can sing along to.
