Igor Stravinsky

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Igor Stravinsky was a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov and became famous in Paris with ballets for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. In Le sacre du printemps from 1913, clashing chords and irregular, stamping rhythms drive on the story of a pagan sacrifice. The premiere ended in a famous uproar in the hall. Later he changed style twice more, first to neoclassicism and, in old age, to the twelve-tone technique.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Les augures printaniers (The Augurs of Spring) and hear how the strings keep stamping on one grating chord, with accents that always fall in unexpected places.
