Louis Andriessen

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Louis Andriessen came from a family of composers in Utrecht and for years taught at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. He rejected the symphony orchestra as a bourgeois institution and wrote for ensembles of his own with winds, electric guitars and pianos, which play loudly and without vibrato. In De Staat from 1976 four women's voices sing texts by Plato about the dangerous power of music. In this way he laid the foundation for what came to be called the Hague School.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the beginning of De Staat and hear how oboes and hard chords play in a tight, repeating rhythm, without string vibrato or soft transitions.
