Dmitri Sjostakovitsj

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Dmitri Sjostakovitsj · Dmitri Shostakovich studied in Petrograd and became famous at nineteen with his First Symphony. His career was constantly under pressure from the Soviet regime: in 1936 Pravda tore apart his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District and he had to fear for his life. He wrote fifteen symphonies and fifteen string quartets full of irony, violence and mourning. His Eighth String Quartet from 1960 revolves around his musical monogram, the notes D-Es-C-H (D, E flat, C, B natural in German notation).

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the beginning of the Eighth String Quartet and hear how the cello alone plays the four notes D-Es-C-H on its own, after which the other instruments take them up one by one.
