From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Modest Moessorgski · Modest Mussorgsky was an officer and later a civil servant in St Petersburg and belonged to the Group of Five, composers who wanted a Russian music of their own. He had little formal training and let himself be guided by the sound of the Russian language and folk music instead of Western rules. His Картинки с выставки (Pictures at an Exhibition) from 1874 describes a walk past the work of his late friend Viktor Hartmann. His opera Boris Godunov became a model for Debussy.
