Pictures

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Pictures is an album by the American jazz drummer and composer Jack DeJohnette. He recorded it in February 1976, and it was released a year later on ECM. Remarkably, he plays more than just drums himself: the piano and organ are his too. Only on Pictures 3 to 5 does the guitarist John Abercrombie join in as a guest, on electric and acoustic guitar.

Manfred Eicher produced, Jan Erik Kongshaug was the sound engineer, and the photographs on the cover are by Roberto Masotti. The tracks have no titles but only a number, from Picture 1 to Picture 6. Reception was moderate: AllMusic gave the album two and a half stars.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Picture 3, where John Abercrombie's guitar joins in, and notice how it relates to the drums.
