Sorcery
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Jack DeJohnette recorded Sorcery in 1974, in March at Willow and in May at Bearsville Studios in New York State. The record was released on the Prestige label. Besides DeJohnette himself, who plays drums and also keyboards and saxophone, we hear Bennie Maupin on bass clarinet, the guitarists John Abercrombie and Mick Goodrick and the bassist Dave Holland. The album contains short pieces and long compositions, including Sorcery #1 and The Reverend King Suite, which consists of six parts and is partly based on music by John Coltrane.
The AllMusic reviewer called the music interesting but uneven and thought it had aged badly. At the same time he praised DeJohnette's willingness to take risks.
