Arvo Pärt

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Arvo Pärt, from Estonia, first wrote twelve-tone and collage music, which brought him into conflict with the Soviet regime. After years of silence and study of Gregorian chant and early polyphony he found his own style in 1976, which he called tintinnabuli, after the Latin word for little bells. In it a melody moving in steps sounds together with the notes of a single triad. Spiegel im Spiegel from 1978, for violin and piano, lets you hear that principle in its simplest form.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Spiegel im Spiegel and hear how the piano calmly keeps repeating triads, while the violin steps one note further each time and returns again.
