Holy minimalism
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Holy minimalism · In Soviet-era Estonia, Arvo Pärt found a sober style in 1976 that he called tintinnabuli, after the Latin word for little bells. A melody wanders slowly around while a second voice plays only the notes of a single triad. In Cantus (1977), scales descend above a tolling bell. The Pole Henryk Górecki wrote his Third Symphony in 1976; a recording from 1992 sold more than a million copies.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to how in Cantus the strings play slowly descending scales, ever slower in the lower voices, while a bell keeps tolling.
