Third

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Third is Portishead's third studio album and their first in eleven years, after Portishead of 1997. Island Records released it in the United Kingdom on 28 April 2008. In the United States it came out a day later on Mercury. The band produced it themselves and recorded it between 2005 and 2008 in their own studios in Bristol. Beth Gibbons sings, Geoff Barrow plays drums, synthesizers and bass, among other instruments, and Adrian Utley plays guitar, ukulele and keyboards.

The album leaves the trip hop of the earlier records behind. It sounds like experimental rock with electronics. In the United Kingdom it reached number 2, in the Netherlands number 8 and in the United States number 7, the band's highest American debut. Metacritic gives it 85 out of 100. "Machine Gun", "The Rip" and "Magic Doors" were released as singles.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to "Machine Gun" and notice the beat that carries the track. It was later sampled by The Weeknd in "Belong to the World". Hear how hard and mechanical it sounds against the voice of Beth Gibbons.
