Sun Ra

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Herman Blount from Birmingham, Alabama, played piano in the orchestra of Fletcher Henderson, his great example, in 1946 and 1947. In Chicago he took the name Sun Ra and said that he came from Saturn. With his big band, the Arkestra, he lived together as a commune. The band played swing, bebop, free improvisation and early electronic sounds on organ and synthesizer, in costumes from ancient Egypt and space travel. Sun Ra released his records on a label of his own, El Saturn. In 1972 he made the film Space Is the Place. His ideas about space and Black history later came to be called Afrofuturism.
