Ancient Egypt

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Ancient Egypt · On reliefs in tombs near Saqqara, the cemetery of Memphis, harpists, flautists and singers sit side by side around 2500 BC. A singer seems to indicate the melody with hand gestures, and others clap the beat. In the temples, women singers shake the sistrum, a metal rattle associated with the goddess Hathor. The Egyptians did not write music down, so every performance today is a reconstruction on rebuilt instruments.

Listening

Listening tip. This is a reconstruction by Rafael Pérez Arroyo with rebuilt instruments. Listen to how harp, flute and rattles sound together, and ask yourself which choices the musicians had to make themselves because no notes exist.
