Ancient Greece
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Ancient Greece · In Greece, music, poetry and dance belonged together. Singers accompanied themselves on the lyre or the larger kithara, and the aulos, a double reed pipe, sounded at plays and sacrifices. According to tradition, Pythagoras discovered around 530 BC that the octave and the fifth are simple ratios of string lengths. The Greeks also had a musical notation, with which the Seikilos song has been preserved on a gravestone from the first century: the oldest complete piece of music that we know.
Listening
Listening tip. This is the Seikilos song, sung to the notes on the stone; rhythm and accompaniment are reconstruction. Listen to how the short melody makes an arc in four phrases, to a text that says you should shine as long as you live, for life lasts only a short while.
