Roman music
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
The Romans took over much music from the Greeks, but turned it into spectacle. In the theatre, at triumphal processions and in the arena, the straight tuba, the round horn called the cornu and the hydraulis sounded, an organ from Alexandria in which water kept the air under pressure. A mosaic from Zliten in Libya shows that trio at gladiator fights. No Roman music has survived in written form; what we hear are reconstructions on rebuilt instruments.
Listening
Listening tip. This is a reconstruction by Synaulia on rebuilt Roman instruments, because real Roman notation does not exist. Hear which tone colours the makers chose for an arena full of spectators, and which instruments you recognise.
