Sun Ra
Uit HitStory, de popencyclopedie van School of Rock · Artiest
Herman Blount uit Birmingham, Alabama, speelde in 1946 en 1947 piano in het orkest van Fletcher Henderson, zijn grote voorbeeld. In Chicago nam hij de naam Sun Ra aan en vertelde hij dat hij van Saturnus kwam. Met zijn bigband, de Arkestra, woonde hij als een commune samen. De band speelde swing, bebop, vrije improvisatie en vroege elektronische klanken op orgel en synthesizer, in kostuums uit het oude Egypte en de ruimtevaart. Sun Ra bracht zijn platen uit op een eigen label, El Saturn. In 1972 maakte hij de film Space Is the Place. Zijn ideeën over ruimte en zwarte geschiedenis kregen later de naam afrofuturisme.
