Cosmos

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Cosmos is an album by Sun Ra and his Arkestra, recorded in 1976 in France. It was released on the French label Cobra in Europe and on Inner City Records in the United States. Sun Ra wrote all the pieces himself and here plays Rocksichord, an electric keyboard instrument. He leads a band that includes John Gilmore on tenor saxophone, Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on alto saxophone and flute, and also trumpet, horn, trombone, bassoon, bass clarinet and electric bass.

The titles point to outer space: Interstellar Low Ways, Moonship Journey, Journey Among the Stars and Jazz from an Unknown Planet. Ron Wynn of AllMusic wrote that Sun Ra plays beautiful moments on the Rocksichord. The Arkestra plays stomping, atmospheric numbers or hard bop, and in them various saxophonists briefly come to the fore in dialogues that sound fast, screaming and sometimes spacey.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Jazz from an Unknown Planet to hear how the horns alternate and respond to each other over the band's rhythm.
