Space Is the Place
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Space Is the Place by Sun Ra was released in 1973 on the Blue Thumb label. In 1998 Impulse! Records reissued the album. Stephen Cook of AllMusic called it an excellent introduction to Sun Ra's extensive, free jazz catalogue, and a recommendation for lovers of Sun Ra.
The title song is described by the BBC as his ultimate anthem. In that song, science fiction and ancient myth come together with everything jazz has to offer. That combination also appealed to rock bands, such as the MC5, Sonic Youth and Primal Scream, who were at the forefront of rock.
