The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra · The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra is the fourth studio album by Sun Ra and his Arkestra. It was recorded on 10 October 1961 for Savoy and came out in 1962. Tom Wilson supervised. It was the first record by a slimmed-down Arkestra, after the bandleader and the core of the group had moved from Chicago to New York. The recording took place at Medallion Studio in Newark.

He plays acoustic piano throughout the record. Various percussion instruments give some tracks a touch of the exotic. Except for The Beginning, all the pieces are very accessible. China Gates was written by Victor Young, the rest by the bandleader himself. Distribution was poor and no reviews appeared for years. In 1984 the album was reissued as We Are in the Future. It is regarded as one of the most accessible records in his large body of work.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tapestry from an Asteroid and notice how the piano and the percussion together give a distinctive tone colour.
